  • Satoshi Saffen founded the Japanese streetwear line Nonnative in 1999, initially selling graphic t-shirts under the same name. Spending the first 13 years of his life in Baltimore, Saffen relocated to Tokyo and channeled his knowledge of American cultural movements into a passion for graphic design, eventually selling his graphic t-shirts at the store Motorwn during the beginning of the Japanese Urahara movement. Interest in the small brand grew and Saffen enlisted Takayuki Fujii as head designer to push the label forward. With a shared interest in functionality and daily wear, Nonnative twists classic Americana by reshaping silhouettes and inserting highly practical and durable materials. Military influenced outerwear with GORE-TEX reinforcements, classic denim, and rugged footwear define an aesthetic that embodies the brands name as a neutral and thoughtful blend of the founder’s cultural influences remains.
