Soon after her graduation from Central Saint Martins in London, Grace Wales Bonner launched her eponymous label, and received quick critical praise. Bonner was awarded the Emerging Menswear Designer at the British Fashion Awards in 2015, and the prestigious LVMH Young Designer Prize in 2016. This critical recognition helped launch the designer's menswear into global fashion retailers, as well as facilitated an expansion into womenswear.
Inspired by her British-Jamaican heritage Bonner is both a celebrated designer and a fervent academic. The interplay between art and academia is apparent in the ethos of her work throughout her design process. Utilizing reference material across African-Diasporic thought, art, and culture, Wales Bonner’s collections weave vintage 70’s and 80’s stylings, storytelling, and an exploration of black masculinity to create a final product that stands out among its contemporaries. Retro sneaker runs, vibrant knitwear, and expressive silhouettes nod to Bonner’s multitude of influences while evoking a contemporary vision of both the history and future of the diaspora.
