  • Martin Margiela founded his eponymous label in 1988. A 1979 graduate of Antwerps’s renowned Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Margiela is considered an honorary member of the legendary group of designers, known as the “Antwerp Six,” that emerged from the school in the early 80s. After stints with Belgian coat manufacturer Bartsons and Jean Paul Gaultier, Margiela teamed with business partner Jenny Meirens to form his brand, which reacted to the maximalist aesthetics of European designers at the time. Margiela’s designs became immediately recognizable for their unfinished details and use of reworked fabrics and trims, while Margiela became known for his reclusive nature, which is reflected even in his label’s branding; each product line is denoted simply by a number. In 2009, he resigned from his position as creative director of the brand and, in 2014, after five years of collections created by an anonymous team of designers, the brand hired ex-Dior designer John Galliano as its creative director.
