Juxtaposing folklore with sportswear, Chopova Lowena is the eponymously named ready-to-wear label designing eclectic and one-of-a-kind pieces through a distinctly anthropological approach. Inspired by Emma Chopova’s Bulgarian culture and Laura Lowena’s fascination with 1980’s rock climbing imagery, Chopova Lowena is a hybrid of cultural influences that coalesce to build an aesthetic world entirely their own. Traditional Bulgarian textiles, crafts, and techniques work to create patchworked pleated kilts suspended with carabiner fastening clips, while colorful tartan dresses are reimagined with abstract prints and avant-garde details. In accomplishing their aesthetic vision, they prioritize sustainability through the utilization of recycled and deadstock textiles sourced from Bulgaria, including pillowcases, aprons, and blankets, and in doing so, have worked to revitalize a community of seamstresses that are passionate about preserving cultural heritage. Sustainability, ethical consumption, and artisanal craftsmanship sit at the heart of Chopova Lowena, working in unison with their unconventional designs for an undeniably modern ethos.
