  • Beginning as a pattern-maker for, and then a protégé of, Rei Kawakubo, Junya Watanabe launched his eponymous label under the Comme des Garçons umbrella in 1992, presented his first collection in Paris in 1993 and introduced his menswear line in 2001. Despite being a product of Tokyo’s famous Bunka Fashion Institute, which has produced a who’s who of brilliant Japanese designers, including Yohji Yamamoto and Jun Takahashi, Watanabe has been recognized for his singular imagination. And, although Watanabe values privacy (he rarely grants interviews and doesn’t emerge for the customary bow at his runway shows), he has become renowned for his craftsmanship—in particular, his patchwork designs—and technical experimentation, such as a solar panel coat that he created for FW16.
