Maison Margiela men’s standard fit black calf leather and suede low top sneaker. For his SS99 “Artisanal” runway presentation, Martin Margiela outfitted his models in surplus pairs of the “Federal Defense Sports Shoe,” a 70s-era Federal German Army training sneaker produced by competing sneaker companies adidas and PUMA and based loosely on the track shoe they outfitted Jesse Owens in during the 1936 Olympics when they were still a single company known as the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory. Originally called the “Graffiti Sports Shoe,” Margiela and his team hand-painted and numbered pairs of surplus GATs (Germany Army Trainers) and shipped them out to stores with cards that encouraged buyers to “Feel free to add your own graffiti.” A few years later, Margiela began manufacturing his own version of the sneaker, now called the “Replica,” which has since not only become a blank canvas for the Maison Margiela design team, but also one of the most beloved and, ironically, replicated luxury sneakers on the planet.
