Known for its cult status with hardcore British football fans and founded by Italian graphic artist and designer Mossimo Osti in 1982, Stone Island is arguably the most sought-after technical fashion brands in the world. Osti established his first line, C.P. Company, in 1975 with the intent of producing garments with “Function and Use.” Seven years after introducing the brand, Osti came upon a double-faced fabric called “Tela Stella” used to make truck tarpaulins, which inspired him to produce a collection of seven pieces that eventually led to the creation of Stone Island. Although Osti left Stone Island in 1994 (and died in 2005), the brand has continued the designer’s legacy of technical innovation and fashion-forward aesthetics. Stone Island’s design team is currently overseen by Carlo Rivetti, who has owned and operated the company, as well as C.P. Company, since 1983. In 2008, Stone Island doubled-down on the relationship between form and function when it introduced Shadow Project, a premium collaborative collection designed by Michaela Sachenbacher and Errolson Hugh of ACRONYM®.
