Toronto-based designer Spencer Badu founded his eponymous, gender neutral label in 2015 during his freshman year at a technical fashion school. Drawing influence from the Bauhaus art movement, architecture, and conceptual fashion designers like Rick Owens, Badu strives “[…] to create a uniform that incorporates masculine and feminine elements, and propose new cuts, proportions, and colors in a quiet way.” While Badu’s early designs were overtly political, such as t-shirts with the slogan “[Post Gender Future]” printed across the back, Spencer Badu has grown into a brand that now speaks in subtle tones, both literally and figuratively. Working with a predominantly black and white color palette, Badu creates streamlined, functional garments—such as collarless sport coats, sculptural cargo pants, and bomber jackets with backpack straps—that fit a garden of genders and body types.
