Born in New York, raised in Israel, and based in London, designer Roni Ilan took a circuitous route to the fashion industry before presenting the first collection of her unisex, namesake label for FW17. Ilan received her BS in Economics but eschewed a career in finance, instead choosing to enroll in the Menswear program at Central Saint Martins. She assisted Thom Browne during her third-year internship and then moved back to London to work for William Richard Green who she ended up marrying and having a child with. After giving birth, Ilan “began looking practically at making items of clothing that we wear every day: pajamas, tailored shirts, and jackets,” which eventually led to her eponymous brand. In its nascent existence, Ilan’s label has already demonstrated a fine-tuned aesthetic that might be described as modern, architectural minimalism coupled with a close attention to high-quality production. All of brand’s garments are made at its studio and factory in London, with Ilan overseeing the design process from start to finish.
