First launched in 1988 as part of the ISSEY MIYAKE collection, PLEATS PLEASE became a brand in its own right for SS94 and is renowned for its unique garment pleating technique in which pleats are added to clothes after they are sewn into shape. Channeling Japanese designer Issey Miyake’s fundamental concept that “design is not for philosophy, but for life,” PLEATS PLEASE offers beautiful, functional clothes that are lightweight, wrinkle-proof, washable, and easily packable, making them suitable for all settings of daily life. Issey Miyake debuted his eponymous label in New York in 1971 and began showing his collection at Paris Fashion Week for FW73. By focusing on “a piece of cloth”—creating clothes from original materials starting with the research of a single thread—Miyake helped dissolve the boundaries between Eastern and Western design. Currently led by designer Yoshiyuki Miyamae and his team since SS2012, ISSEY MIYAKE continues to create innovative clothes that showcase Japanese design and contemporary technology.
