PHIPPS
California-born and Paris-based, Spencer Phipps is the designer taking aim at the excessive waste and green-washing of the fashion industry with his eponymously named label, PHIPPS. A former designer at Marc Jacobs and the first-ever American designer at Dries Van Noten, Phipps founded the label in 2017 on the principles of respect for the environment and an integration of sustainable ideology into menswear. Functionality, quality, and a deeply ingrained commitment to environmentalism all inform the construction of PHIPPS and are apparent in the natural-dyed fabrics, canvas workwear pants, and detailed precision of jacquard knits. Equally as focused on ethical production, PHIPPS prioritizes the shift in narrative of sustainable menswear; one that inserts style and elevated aestheticism into play through calculated design choices. Infused throughout the label is also a sense of Americana; a sort of nostalgic rendering of Phipps homeland told through iconography of the Old West and America’s inherent tie to the outdoors. Nods to “This Land is Your Land” and “Spirit of Freedom” displayed over stereotypical American landscapes are packed with irony as the label explores conversations in excessive consumption and capitalism, while the acknowledgement, and solution, being presented by PHIPPS provides hope that the future of fashion sustainability lies in this sort of intentional, direct, and creative activism.
