Founded in 2013 by Kanye West creative director, #BEENTRILL# co-founder, PYREX VISION creator, and deejay Virgil Abloh, Off-White™ is arguably the most influential luxury streetwear label in fashion today. Born in 1980, Abloh grew up in a Ghanaian-American family in Rockford, Illinois, not far from Chicago. After receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2002 and his Master’s Degree in Architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2006, Abloh worked as an architect for two years before setting his sights on the fashion industry. In 2009, he co-founded the store RSVP Gallery and joined West’s creative agency DONDA. In 2012, he launched his first brand PYREX VISION and co-founded the art collective and DJ crew #BEENTRILL# with Matthew M. Williams (of 1017 ALYX 9SM) and Heron Preston; the following year, he debuted Off-White™, building upon the sample-heavy streetwear aesthetic he established with his previous projects. In fact, Abloh’s interest in sampling and tweaking designs (sometimes by a mere three percent) can be seen in his brand’s logos, which appropriate the signage created by Margaret Calvert and Jock Kinneir for the 60s redesign of the Glasgow Airport. In 2015, Off-White was named an LVMH Prize finalist and, in 2018, Abloh was named artistic director of Louis Vuitton.
