Heron Preston

A post-internet renaissance man, Heron Johnson originally founded his eponymous label in high school, choosing to use a combination of his first and middle names because he felt they sounded more “regal” than his last. Born and raised in San Francisco, Johnson moved to New York City in 2004 to attend Parsons School of Design; he began documenting the city’s downtown scene through a blog, which led to the publication of his polaroid photo book, The Young and the Banging, in 2008 by Know Wave founder Al Moran’s contemporary art gallery Morán Morán (formerly OHWOW) and the creation of #BEENTRILL# with Off-White™ founder Virgil Abloh and 1017 ALYX 9SM founder Matthew M. Williams. Johnson then worked as an art director for Kanye West while also selling “bootleg” t-shirts covered in corporate logos on Instagram. In 2015, he had an epiphany about waste in the fashion industry when his leg brushed against a plastic bag during a swim in the Mediterranean and, as a result, he contacted the New York Department of Sanitation, which led to the 2016 debut of UNIFORM, a collection of pants, hoodies, jackets and shirts that had been decommissioned by the DSNY or were sourced from Goodwill. After launching his HPC Trading Co. e-store the same year, Johnson relaunched Heron Preston for FW17 at Paris Fashion Week with a workwear-inspired streetwear collection.
