Founded in 2018, Japanese designer Fumito Ganryu’s eponymous label offers “conceptual wear for the 21st century.” A 2000 graduate of the legendary Bunka Fashion College, Ganryu joined the Comme des Garçons team in 2004 as a patternmaker for Junya Watanabe, before launching his own brand, GANRYU, in 2007, as one of the company’s many sublabels. In the ten years that GANRYU operated, before shuttering in 2017, the brand developed a reputation for its “forward-thinking casualwear,” which reinterpreted everyday garments, such as jeans and coach’s jackets, with idiosyncratic silhouettes and details. Ganryu’s independent label takes a more experimental approach to the aesthetic and techniques he perfected at Comme des Garçons, with poncho t-shirts, hoodies stretched into monk-like robes, and square t-shirt graphics that zip apart, as just a few examples the designer’s singular vision.
