Founded in 2016 by real-life partners Matthew Herman and David Kien, Boy Smells produces candles and intimate apparel that moves beyond gender. Both fashion industry veterans, Herman and Kien began their brand by making the fluid and essential products they wanted to use daily. Signature scents like Cinderose, a union of rose and smoke, and Gardner, a mix of honeysuckle and tomato vine, exemplify their ethos by wrapping traditionally masculine scents in sweeter bouquets. Herman and Kien develop and mix all Boy Smells candles in their Los Angeles home using fragrance, natural oils, all-natural coconut wax, and beeswax; the candles are then hand-poured in reusable glass vessels and hand-labeled in LA. In 2018, Boy Smells introduced Boy Smells, Unmentionables, their first line of intimate apparel. Designed for all genders and sizes, the collection is produced in Peru from ultra-soft Pima cotton and dyed using an eco-friendly process in a palette of neo-natural, skin-tone-inclusive colors.
